Black Friday is a sensible time to buy an Apple Watch, because Amazon has already shown how far it will go. During its October sale it cut every Series 12 aluminum model by about $50, taking the 42mm GPS version under $350, then returned them to roughly their usual prices. The one watch clearly discounted right now is last year's Ultra 3, about $75 below what it sold for over the past three months.
We checked every price below against what each watch actually sold for over the past 90 days, not against the list price. Where a watch is not discounted yet, we say so.
Our picks at a glance
8 deals1.The current Apple Watch with the new heart-rate sensor and Readiness score. At its usual price now; it fell under $350 in October.
2.The cheapest current Apple Watch, with last year's flagship chip and an always-on screen. Not discounted yet; it hit $199 in early October.
3.The Series 12 with a bigger screen for larger wrists. A couple of dollars under its usual price; it sold for about $400 in October.
4.The Apple Watch for people who hate charging: a 50-hour rated battery, satellite connectivity and a titanium case. Only a few dollars under usual.
5.Ultra 4's case, screen and satellite hardware for $125 less. About $75 under its 90-day price, the clearest saving on this page.
6.For runners and swimmers who leave the iPhone behind. At its usual price; it fell to about $450 in early October.
7.The SE 3 in the larger size, for bigger wrists. Slightly above its recent price; it sold for $229 in early October.
8.The big-screen Series 12 with its own cellular connection. At its usual price; it dipped to about $500 in October.
Our picks
#1Best overall
Apple Watch Series 12 (GPS, 42mm)
by Apple
The Series 12 is the Apple Watch most people should buy. Tom's Guide gave it an Editor's Choice award and TechRadar called it the best mainline model in years. The upgrades are mostly about health: a new sensor that checks heart rate in the background every five seconds and feeds a daily Readiness score. Macworld was cooler, reporting uneven battery and charging results, so plan around the 24-hour rating rather than hoping for more.
The 42mm GPS model suits most wrists and most budgets. It is selling for its usual price of about $390, so this is not a deal yet. Amazon took it under $350 during its October sale, and that is the price we would wait for.
Pros
- +New heart-rate sensor takes background readings every five seconds
- +Readiness score and more frequent HRV readings
- +Faster charging: Apple claims 12 hours of use from 15 minutes
- +Ceramic Shield 2 cover glass and a 2,000-nit display
Cons
- −Battery still rated at 24 hours
- −Readiness needs about a week of sleep data before it shows a score
- −Macworld saw inconsistent battery and charging results in testing
- Case size
- 42mm
- Connectivity
- GPS
- Case
- Aluminum
- Chip
- S11

#2Best budget
Apple Watch SE 3 (GPS, 40mm)
by Apple
The SE 3 gets you most of the Apple Watch for the least money. It runs the same S10 chip as last year's flagship and finally has an always-on display; Engadget named it the best budget Apple Watch and T3 called it the most capable entry model yet. The trade-offs are the dated, thick-bezeled design and missing health features: no ECG, blood oxygen or hypertension alerts. Its 18-hour rating also means charging every night.
At about $240 it is a little above its typical price over the past three months, about $231, so it is not discounted. It sold for $199 in early October. Hold out for something close to that.
Pros
- +Same S10 chip as last year's Series 11 and Ultra 3
- +Always-on display, a first for the SE line
- +Lowest starting price of any current Apple Watch
Cons
- −No ECG, blood oxygen readings or hypertension alerts
- −Older design with thick bezels around the screen
- −Shortest rated battery in the lineup
- Case size
- 40mm
- Connectivity
- GPS
- Case
- Aluminum
- Chip
- S10
- Rated battery

#3
Apple Watch Series 12 (GPS, 46mm)
by Apple
This is the same watch as our top pick in the larger case. Choose it if you have bigger wrists, read a lot of messages on your wrist, or want a little more battery, since the larger case holds a slightly bigger cell. Everything else, from the S11 chip to the Readiness score, is identical to the 42mm.
It costs about $50 more than the 42mm. At about $440 it is only a couple of dollars under what it has sold for over the past three months, and it dropped to about $400 in October. Wait for Black Friday unless you need it now.
Pros
- +Larger screen for notifications, maps and workout data
- +Slightly longer real-world battery than the 42mm
- +Same S11 chip, sensors and Readiness score as the 42mm
Cons
- −Large on slim wrists
- −Battery still rated at 24 hours
- −Readiness needs about a week of sleep data before it shows a score
- Case size
- 46mm
- Connectivity
- GPS
- Case
- Aluminum
- Chip
- S11
- Rated battery

#4Best premium
Apple Watch Ultra 4 (49mm)
by Apple
The Ultra 4 is the Apple Watch to buy if nightly charging is the dealbreaker. Apple rates it at 50 hours, and 9to5Mac got about 48 hours in its test, so the multi-day claim holds up. Add satellite connectivity, the largest Apple Watch screen and the Series 12's new health sensing, and it is the most complete watch Apple makes.
The5krunner points out that the gains over the Ultra 3 are mostly battery and health tracking; the case, display and satellite hardware are unchanged. At $774 it is only a few dollars under its usual price, though that does match the lowest this listing has sold for. Another color dipped to about $700 in October, so a deeper Black Friday cut is plausible.
Pros
- +50-hour rated battery, 84 hours in Low Power Mode
- +Up to 18 hours of GPS outdoor workout tracking
- +Satellite connectivity where there is no cell signal
- +New heart-rate sensor and Readiness score from the Series 12
Cons
- −Modest hardware gains over the Ultra 3
- −Drops support for GLONASS satellites
- −Large 49mm case overwhelms small wrists
- Case size
- 49mm
- Connectivity
- GPS + Cellular
- Case
- Titanium
- Chip
- S11
- Rated battery
- 50 hours

#5
Apple Watch Ultra 3 (49mm)
by Apple
If you want an Ultra but not the Ultra 4 price, this is the one to buy. Apple has discontinued it, but it shares the Ultra 4's titanium case, display and satellite hardware, and still carries a 42-hour rating. Engadget made it its pick for adventurers, and the5krunner argues a discounted Ultra 3 is the smarter buy unless you need 18-hour workout tracking or the Readiness score.
It is also the clearest saving on this page. At $649, this listing (the one with the Anchor Blue Ocean Band) is about $75 under its 90-day price and $125 less than the Ultra 4. It did sell for about $600 in late September, so a further cut is possible. The other Ultra 3 listings we checked cost more or are sold by third-party sellers.
Pros
- +Same case, display and satellite hardware as the Ultra 4
- +42-hour rated battery
- +Rugged titanium build that testers still found comfortable
Cons
- −No Readiness score or new heart-rate sensor
- −Eight fewer hours of rated battery than the Ultra 4
- −Last year's model, discontinued by Apple
- Case size
- 49mm
- Connectivity
- GPS + Cellular
- Case
- Titanium
- Chip
- S10
- Rated battery
- 42 hours

Apple Watch Series 12 (GPS + Cellular, 42mm)
by Apple
Cellular lets the Series 12 take calls, send messages, stream music and call emergency services with your iPhone at home. That is worth paying for if you run, swim or walk the dog without your phone. Macworld advises skipping cellular unless you often leave the iPhone behind, and we agree: it adds about $100 up front, plus a monthly carrier plan.
It is otherwise the same watch as our top pick. At about $490 it is selling for its usual price, and it fell to about $450 in early October. That is the number to watch for.
Pros
- +Calls, messages and music with the iPhone left at home
- +5G connection on its own
- +Same sensors and Readiness score as the GPS model
Cons
- −Needs a carrier plan billed monthly
- −Battery still rated at 24 hours
- Case size
- 42mm
- Connectivity
- GPS + Cellular
- Case
- Aluminum
- Chip
- S11
- Rated battery
- 24 hours

#7
Apple Watch SE 3 (GPS, 44mm)
by Apple
This is the SE 3 in its larger size, for buyers who want the budget pick on a bigger wrist or with a bigger screen. Everything we said about the 40mm applies: last year's flagship chip, an always-on display, and no ECG, blood oxygen or hypertension alerts.
The price is the weak spot right now. At about $270 it is roughly $5 above what it sold for over the past three months, and it went for $229 in early October. If the gap to the 40mm stays near $30, the 40mm is the better value unless the bigger size matters to you.
Pros
- +Bigger screen than the 40mm SE 3
- +Same S10 chip and always-on display
- +Costs well under any Series 12
Cons
- −No ECG, blood oxygen readings or hypertension alerts
- −Older design with thick bezels around the screen
- −Shortest rated battery in the lineup
- Case size
- 44mm
- Connectivity
- GPS
- Case
- Aluminum
- Chip
- S10
- Rated battery
- 18 hours

Apple Watch Series 12 (GPS + Cellular, 46mm)
by Apple
This combines the larger Series 12 case with a cellular connection. It suits runners and hikers with larger wrists who want the bigger screen for maps and workout data, plus the freedom to leave the phone at home. The larger case also holds a slightly bigger battery, so it lasts a little longer between charges.
It is the most expensive aluminum Series 12, and it is not discounted: at about $540 it sits at its usual price. Amazon took it to about $500 in October, so wait for Black Friday before buying.
Pros
- +Largest Series 12 screen with cellular built in
- +Calls, messages and music with the iPhone left at home
- +Slightly longer real-world battery than the 42mm
Cons
- −Needs a carrier plan billed monthly
- −Large on slim wrists
- −Battery still rated at 24 hours
- Case size
- 46mm
- Connectivity
- GPS + Cellular
- Case
- Aluminum
- Chip
- S11
- Rated battery

How to choose an Apple Watch this Black Friday
Choose the model by battery and health features. The SE 3 covers fitness, sleep and notifications but leaves out ECG, blood oxygen and hypertension alerts. The Series 12 adds those and the new heart-rate sensor. The Ultra models are for people who want to charge every two days rather than every night.
Pick the size for your wrist, not the screen. The smaller cases (40mm and 42mm) suit most wrists; the larger ones (44mm and 46mm) give a bigger screen and slightly more battery for about $30 to $50 more.
Skip cellular unless you will use it. GPS + Cellular adds about $100 to the price and a monthly carrier fee. If your iPhone is nearly always in your pocket, the GPS model does everything you need.
Ignore the list price. Most of these watches show a list price only a few dollars above what they sell for. The useful benchmark is Amazon's October sale, when Series 12 aluminum models were about $50 cheaper than they are now. Treat anything above those prices on Black Friday as ordinary.
Make sure you have an iPhone. Apple Watch does not work with Android. If it is a gift, check on Apple's compatibility page that the recipient's iPhone runs a recent enough version of iOS.
How we chose these apple watch deals
