Kindles are usually some of Amazon's deepest Black Friday discounts. Last November the 2024 Paperwhite fell to about $125 and the basic Kindle to about $80. This year starts from a higher base: Amazon raised Kindle prices in August, launched a redesigned lineup in October, and now charges the same for the 2024 models as for their 2026 replacements.
When we checked in late October, none of the Picks below was discounted against what it sold for over the past 90 days, and most sat a little above it. We compare with recent selling prices, not list prices, and each Pick says where its price stands and how low it went in the past year.
Our picks at a glance
8 deals1.The newest Paperwhite, thinner and lighter with a 12-week battery rating. At its launch price, the same as the 2024 model.
2.The cheapest Kindle we would buy, for reading in bed rather than the bath. Not discounted when we checked; it fell to about $80 last November.
3.Color for comics, cookbooks and picture books. Above its recent typical price now, and it fell to about $170 last November.
4.The proven Paperwhite, but no cheaper than the 2026 model right now. Worth it if it drops back toward last year's low of about $125.
5.The Paperwhite with no ads, double the storage and wireless charging. Not discounted at the moment.
6.The Kindle for writing notes and marking up PDFs, pen included. Back at full price after a cut to about $380 in early October.
7.A waterproof Paperwhite with a kid cover, a year of Kids+ and a two-year guarantee. No discount when we checked; about $135 last November.
8.The most capable Kindle, with color reading and writing on an 11-inch screen. At full price now; about $480 in early October.
Our picks
#1Best overall
Kindle Paperwhite (2026, 16GB)
by Amazon
The Paperwhite is the Kindle most people should buy, and while both generations cost the same, the 2026 model is the one to get. It is thinner and lighter, the front is flush from edge to edge, the battery is rated for up to 12 weeks and can be replaced, and Amazon says the screen has the highest contrast of any Paperwhite. Warm light and IPX8 waterproofing carry over.
The caveat is that it ships from October 28, so no independent reviewer has measured it yet. Launch coverage from Engadget and Good e-Reader is positive, though Good e-Reader sees little reason for 2024 owners to upgrade. It is at its launch price with no discount so far. If the 2024 Paperwhite below gets a real cut and this one does not, the older model becomes the better buy.
Pros
- +Thinner and lighter than the 2024 Paperwhite
- +Edge-to-edge flush front
- +Battery rated for up to 12 weeks, and replaceable
- +Warm light and IPX8 waterproofing
Cons
- −No full independent review yet
- −Little reason to upgrade from a 2024 Paperwhite
- −No USB-C cable in the box
- −Lockscreen ads unless you pay to remove them
- Screen
- 7 in, black and white
- Storage
- 16 GB
- Waterproof
- IPX8
- Model year
- 2026

#2Best budget
Kindle (2024, 16GB)
by Amazon
The basic Kindle suits anyone who reads novels in bed or on a commute and wants something that fits in a jacket pocket. Its 6-inch, 300 ppi screen is as sharp as the Paperwhite's, just smaller. Tom's Guide and TechRadar both note it changed little from the 2022 model, and it still has no warm light or water resistance, so skip it if you read in the bath or by the pool.
When we checked, the 2026 Kindle cost the same and is lighter, but Good e-Reader and Inkframe both reported accidental page turns on its flush screen, so we would still take this one. At just under $150 it is a little above its recent typical price. Last November it fell to about $80, and that is the kind of cut worth waiting for.
Pros
- +Small and light enough for a jacket pocket
- +Sharp 300 ppi screen
- +USB-C charging
Cons
- −No warm light
- −No water resistance
- −Plastic body feels cheap
- −Slow book downloads, according to reviewers
- Screen
- 6 in, black and white
- Storage
- 16 GB
- Waterproof
- No
- Model year
- 2024

#3
Kindle Colorsoft (2024, 16GB)
by Amazon
The Colorsoft is for readers who want color: comics, manga, cookbooks, travel guides and children's picture books. Tom's Guide found the color sharp and vibrant, and Engadget called it the missing piece in the Kindle range. The cost is a slightly dimmer page and softer text than the Paperwhite, so if you mostly read novels, the Paperwhite has the better screen. Some early owners reported a yellow band at the bottom of the display, which Amazon said affected a small number of units.
When we checked, it cost the same as the 2026 Colorsoft, which promises better contrast but ships October 28 and has not been measured. This one has a year of reviews behind it. At about $15 above its recent typical price it is not a deal; it sold for about $170 last November.
Pros
- +Color covers, comics and illustrations
- +Highlights in color
- +Warm light and IPX8 waterproofing
- +This version has no lockscreen ads
Cons
- −Color layer makes the page slightly dimmer and text a little softer
- −Shorter battery life than the Paperwhite
- −Some early units developed a yellow band at the bottom of the screen
- Screen
- 7 in, color
- Storage
- 16 GB
- Waterproof
- IPX8
- Model year
- 2024

#4
Kindle Paperwhite (2024, 16GB)
by Amazon
If it were cheaper than its replacement, this would be our top pick. It has the same 7-inch, 300 ppi screen size, warm light and IPX8 rating as the 2026 model, and both Tom's Guide and TechRadar named it the Kindle for most people. What you give up is the thinner body, the edge-to-edge front and the replaceable battery. Owners also report menus that feel slow at times.
Right now there is no reason to choose it over the 2026 Paperwhite. Both cost about $200, and this one sits a little above its recent typical price. That changes if Amazon cuts it to clear stock. It sold for about $125 last November, and at anything near that it is the better buy.
Pros
- +7-inch, 300 ppi glare-free screen
- +Warm light and IPX8 waterproofing
- +Faster page turns than earlier Paperwhites
- +Widely reviewed, with a long track record
Cons
- −Thicker and heavier than the 2026 Paperwhite
- −Touchscreen and menus can feel sluggish
- −Lockscreen ads unless you pay to remove them
- Screen
- 7 in, black and white
- Storage
- 16 GB
- Waterproof
- IPX8
- Model year
- 2024

#5
Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (2024, 32GB)
by Amazon
The Signature Edition is a Paperwhite with extras: 32GB instead of 16GB, wireless charging, a front light that adjusts itself, and no lockscreen ads. The storage matters if you keep Audible audiobooks on your Kindle, and wireless charging matters if you already have a charging pad on your nightstand. Beyond that, Tech Advisor and Android Central both argue the extras are more than most readers need, and Input found the automatic brightness unreliable.
When we checked, it was a little above its recent typical price and cost the same as the 2026 Signature Edition, which adds an aluminum back and dock charging but has not been reviewed yet. Last November it fell to about $150, less than a standard Paperwhite costs today.
Pros
- +32GB, double the standard Paperwhite
- +Wireless charging
- +Front light that adjusts to the room
- +No lockscreen ads
Cons
- −Auto-brightness can be inconsistent
- −Extras most readers will not use
- Screen
- 7 in, black and white
- Storage
- 32 GB
- Waterproof
- IPX8
- Model year
- 2024

#6
Kindle Scribe with Front Light (2025, 32GB)
by Amazon
Buy the Scribe if you will use the pen. It is an 11-inch Kindle for handwritten notes, marking up PDFs and annotating books, and it can pull documents in from Google Drive and OneDrive. TechRadar called it the best note-taking Kindle yet, bigger than before but thinner and lighter. It is also tall and tiring to hold in one hand through a long novel, so readers who only read should stay with a Paperwhite.
This is the version with a front light. The cheaper Scribe without one has about 10GB of usable storage and no light for reading in the dark, and we would not buy it. This model fell to about $380 in early October and is now back at full price, slightly above its recent typical price. Wait for another cut.
Pros
- +11-inch, 300 ppi screen
- +Pen included
- +Imports documents from Google Drive and OneDrive
- +Thinner and lighter than earlier Scribes
Cons
- −Tall and awkward to hold in one hand
- −More than you need if you only read
- Screen
- 11 in, black and white
- Storage
- 32 GB
- Waterproof
- No
- Model year
- 2025

#7
Kindle Paperwhite Kids (2024, 16GB)
by Amazon
For a child's first Kindle, this is the one to give. Underneath the cover it is the waterproof 7-inch Paperwhite, and Good e-Reader picked that model as the best of the Kids range. The box adds a kid cover, a year of Amazon Kids+ and a two-year worry-free guarantee, under which Amazon replaces it if it breaks.
Kids+ renews automatically after the first year, so set a reminder if you do not plan to keep paying for it. When we checked, it was about $20 above its recent typical price, with no discount. It sold for about $135 last November.
Pros
- +Same 7-inch waterproof screen as the Paperwhite
- +A year of Amazon Kids+ included
- +Two-year worry-free replacement guarantee
- +Kid cover in the box
Cons
- −Kids+ renews automatically after the first year
- Screen
- 7 in, black and white
- Storage
- 16 GB
- Waterproof
- IPX8
- Model year
- 2024

#8Best premium
Kindle Scribe Colorsoft (2025, 32GB)
by Amazon
The Scribe Colorsoft is the most capable Kindle Amazon makes: an 11-inch color screen you can read, write and highlight on. TechRadar called it Amazon's most complete e-reader, and Android Authority the most polished big-screen Kindle. It is also the hardest to justify. Tom's Guide found it a tough sell at full price, T3 and Expert Reviews found the note software basic, it has no waterproofing, and its battery does not last as long as the black-and-white Scribe's.
This is the 32GB model. It dropped to about $480 in early October and is now back above $600, a little over its recent typical price. If you want a writing Kindle and can live without color, the Scribe above does the job for less.
Pros
- +Color writing and highlighting
- +Sharp 11-inch display
- +Thin and light for its size
- +Pen included
Cons
- −No waterproofing
- −Basic note-taking software
- −Annotating text is awkward
- −Shorter battery life than the black-and-white Scribe
- Screen
- 11 in, color
- Storage
- 32 GB
- Waterproof
- No
- Model year
- 2025

How to choose a Kindle this Black Friday
Choose the generation by price, not by year. The 2024 and 2026 Kindles share screen sizes; the newer ones are thinner and lighter. When both cost the same, as they did when we checked, buy the 2026 model, except for the basic Kindle (see above). When the 2024 model is $30 or more cheaper, buy that instead.
Decide whether you need warm light and waterproofing. The basic Kindle has neither. If you read at night with the lights down, or anywhere near water, start at the Paperwhite.
Pay for color or a pen only if you will use them. The Colorsoft earns its price on comics, cookbooks and picture books, but its page is slightly dimmer for plain text. The Scribes are for writing. If you mostly read novels, both cost more without reading any better.
Ignore the list price. Amazon raised Kindle prices in August, so a saving shown against list can still be more than these sold for last year. Compare with what the Kindle recently sold for. Each Pick above tells you that, and how low it went in the past 12 months.
Count your storage. 16GB holds thousands of ebooks. Audiobooks and comics fill it far faster, so heavy listeners and manga readers should look at the 32GB Signature Edition.
How we chose these kindle deals
Every deal on this page was selected and checked by Ed Hollinghurst. We start from products with a strong track record in independent reviews and owner feedback, then compare the current Black Friday price against the product's typical selling price over the past months, not just the inflated list price. A deal only makes the cut if the product is genuinely good and the discount is real.
