Laptop prices swing widely over a year, and the holiday season has brought some of the lowest. Last November the Acer Aspire 14 AI fell to about $440, and the MacBook Air M5 sold for about $900 in May, before Apple raised its prices in June.
We checked every price below against what each laptop has sold for at Amazon over the past 90 days and against its lowest price over the past year, not against the list price. When we checked in late October, only the two MacBook Airs were below their usual price. We note where the others stand so you know what to wait for. This list covers everyday laptops for work, school and home; we left gaming laptops out.
Our picks at a glance
7 deals1.The laptop most people should buy: fast, silent and long-lasting, and about $90 under its recent typical price.
2.The cheapest new Mac, with a screen and keyboard better than most Windows laptops near its price. Not discounted yet.
3.Our premium Windows pick, with a 120Hz HDR touchscreen. It sells above its 90-day typical price now, so wait for a cut.
4.A 16GB Intel Windows laptop that runs every Windows app. Not discounted yet; it sold for about $440 last November.
5.The 13-inch Air on a 15.3-inch screen with bigger speakers, about $90 under its recent typical price.
6.The battery-life pick, with an OLED screen and 1TB. Sold by a third party and well above last holiday's price for now.
7.The cheapest laptop we would buy: a dependable Chromebook with a 1080p webcam for school and browsing, under $450.
Our picks
#1Best overall
Apple MacBook Air 13-inch M5, 16GB, 512GB
by Apple
The MacBook Air is the laptop we would hand to most people, and Engadget, Tom's Guide and TechRadar all reach the same verdict. It is fast, it makes no noise because it has no fan, and RTINGS singles out its build and keyboard.
At just under $1,150 it is about $90 below its 90-day typical price. That is a real cut, though it sold for about $900 in May, before Apple's price rise. The downsides are the two ports and a screen that refreshes at 60Hz. If you want a bigger display, the 15-inch Air below has the same chip.
Pros
- +Fanless design, so it stays silent under load
- +Battery rated for up to 18 hours
- +16GB memory and 512GB storage in this configuration
- +Strong build and keyboard
Cons

#2
Apple MacBook Neo 13-inch, 8GB, 256GB
by Apple
The Neo is the cheapest way into a new Mac, and Engadget called it the best $599 laptop it had seen, a verdict from before Apple raised the price. The screen is bright, the keyboard and trackpad are excellent, and PCWorld found nothing about it that feels cheap.
The catch is 8GB of memory, which suits browsing, documents and streaming but not heavy multitasking. Tom's Hardware also points out the keyboard has no backlight. It is not discounted: at just under $700 it sits at its usual price, and it sold for under $600 in March before Apple's June price rise. Buy it now only if you need it now. If you can stretch, the Air above has twice the memory.
Pros
- +Bright screen for its class
- +Excellent keyboard and trackpad
- +Solid build with nothing that feels cheap
Cons
- −8GB memory limits it to light work
- −Keyboard is not backlit
- −Unlabeled ports: one USB 3, one USB 2
- −No Touch ID on the 256GB model

- Apple A18 Pro

For a Windows laptop with the polish of a MacBook, the Surface Laptop is the one to get. Its 120Hz touchscreen is smoother than the 60Hz screens on the MacBook Airs, the X2 Elite chip is faster than the previous generation, and Notebookcheck rates it a very good everyday machine.
Notebookcheck also calls it too expensive at list price for a design that has changed little in two years. At a little over $1,500 it sells above its 90-day typical price, and it went for about $1,400 in July. Wait for a cut. If you rely on older Windows software, the Intel-based Acer below avoids Arm compatibility questions.
Pros
- +120Hz HDR touchscreen
- +Snapdragon X2 Elite is faster than the previous generation
- +Polished build and input
Cons
- −Design little changed in two years
- −Some older Windows apps and games run poorly on Arm
- Chip
- Snapdragon X2 Elite
- Memory
- 16GB
- Storage
- 512GB SSD
- Screen
- 13.8-inch touch, 120Hz

#4
Acer Aspire 14 AI (A14-52M-51S1)
by Acer
The Aspire 14 AI is our pick for a plain, inexpensive Windows laptop that runs every app without thinking about chip compatibility. It pairs an Intel processor with 16GB of memory. Laptop Mag found it enough for the average user, though not for heavy work.
The screen and build are ordinary, and Notebookcheck singled out both. The price is not discounted yet: about $650 is slightly above what it has sold for over the past 90 days, and it fell to about $440 last November. We would hold out for something close to that.
Pros
- +Intel chip, so every Windows app runs natively
- +16GB memory and 512GB storage
- +Enough speed for everyday office and school work
Cons
- −Ordinary 60Hz IPS screen
- −Build has a plasticky feel
- −Not suited to heavy creative work
- Chip
- Intel Core Ultra 5 226V
- Memory
- 16GB
- Storage
- 512GB SSD
- Screen
- 14-inch 1920 x 1200, 60Hz
- OS
- Windows 11

#5
Apple MacBook Air 15-inch M5, 16GB, 512GB
by Apple
The 15-inch Air is the 13-inch Air with more room: a 15.3-inch screen that fits two documents side by side and larger speakers, which Engadget points to as the other reason to size up. The chip, memory and storage match the smaller model, so the extra money buys screen and sound.
It suits people who use the laptop as their only computer and rarely carry it far. At under $1,350 it is about $90 below its 90-day typical price, though it sold for about $1,100 in May. The same two-port and 60Hz limits apply.
Pros
- +15.3-inch screen fits two windows side by side
- +Fuller speakers than the 13-inch
- +Same silent, fanless M5 performance
Cons
- −Only two USB-C ports
- −60Hz screen
- −Takes more room in a bag than the 13-inch
- Chip
- Apple M5
- Memory
- 16GB
- Storage
- 512GB SSD
- Screen
- 15.3-inch, 60Hz

#6
HP OmniBook 5 14-inch OLED (14-he0099nr)
by HP
The OmniBook 5 earns its place on battery life. Notebookcheck gave it an Editors' Choice for the best endurance in its class, PCMag rated its power efficiency the best it had seen in years, and The Verge called the battery life ridiculous. It also brings an OLED screen and 1TB of storage.
The trade-offs are real. The Verge found the Snapdragon chip sluggish at times and the speakers weak, the screen is dim outdoors, and Amazon owners rate it lower than reviewers do. The price is the bigger problem today: Amazon is not selling it directly, the third-party price of about $970 is above its 90-day typical price, and it sold for about $450 last December. Skip it unless the price falls well under $700.
Pros
- +Battery life that tops its class in reviewers' tests
- +OLED screen
- +1TB storage
Cons
- −300-nit screen is dim outdoors
- −Weak speakers
- −Can feel sluggish, and some apps misbehave on Arm
- Chip
- Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100
- Memory
- 16GB
- Storage
- 1TB SSD
- Screen
- 14-inch OLED
- OS
- Windows 11

#7Best budget
ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34 (CX3402CBA)
by ASUS
The CX34 is the cheapest laptop we would still recommend. PCWorld names it the best Chromebook for its reliable performance and 1080p webcam, and Trusted Reviews praised the port selection.
It runs ChromeOS, so it suits schoolwork and browsing rather than desktop software. RTINGS measured under 8 hours of battery and noted dull colors. Amazon is not the seller right now; a third-party seller lists it under $450, which is about its usual price, and it sold for about $270 last December, so a lower price is worth waiting for.
Pros
- +Reliable everyday performance on ChromeOS
- +1080p webcam
- +Good selection of ports
Cons
- −Weak speakers
- −Dull screen color
- −Battery under 8 hours in RTINGS testing
- −8GB memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded
- Chip
- Intel Core i3-1215U
- Memory
- 8GB
- Storage
- 128GB
- Screen
- 14-inch 1920 x 1080

How to choose a laptop this Black Friday
Pick the operating system before the laptop. If you already use an iPhone, a Mac fits in with the least effort. If you need specific Windows software, choose Windows. If you live in a browser, a Chromebook costs the least.
Buy 16GB of memory if you can. Memory on most laptops is soldered and cannot be upgraded. 8GB is fine for light use on the MacBook Neo and the Chromebook, but 16GB keeps a laptop usable for longer.
Check Arm compatibility on Windows. The Surface Laptop and HP OmniBook 5 use Snapdragon chips, which give long battery life but run some older apps and games poorly. The Acer uses Intel and runs everything.
Ignore the list price. Several laptops here list well above what they sell for. Compare with the 90-day typical price, which is what we use, and remember that several of our picks sold for much less at some point in the past year.
Use the holiday return window. Amazon usually extends returns on items bought in November and December into January, which gives you time to live with a keyboard and screen before committing.
How we chose these laptop deals
Every deal on this page was selected and checked by Ed Hollinghurst. We start from products with a strong track record in independent reviews and owner feedback, then compare the current Black Friday price against the product's typical selling price over the past months, not just the inflated list price. A deal only makes the cut if the product is genuinely good and the discount is real.
