Luggage goes on sale on Amazon several times a year, and most of the bags below have a record of real cuts: the Samsonite Freeform carry-on sold for $84 in late June, and the Travelpro Maxlite 5 carry-on hit its 12-month low during Thanksgiving week last year. As we checked in late October, though, none of our Picks was below its 90-day average, so Black Friday has a bar to clear.
We compared every price with what each bag sold for on Amazon over the past 90 days and its lowest price of the past year, not the list price. Where a bag is sold by a third-party seller, its Pick says so.
Our picks at a glance
8 deals1.The carry-on two testing sites rank first: tough, well organized and smooth to roll. At its usual price now; it sold for about $295 in late June.
2.The cheapest carry-on we would buy: a roomy, expandable hardshell from Samsonite. At its usual $130 now; it fell to $84 in late June.
3.Our checked bag: the same build and wheels as our top carry-on, plus a fold-out suiter. At its usual price; it sold for $370 in late June.
4.A large, light checked hardshell for far less than the Travelpro. About $12 above its 90-day average; it fell to $126 in early October.
5.Three expandable softside spinners in one box. At its usual price of about $415, roughly double the $199 it sold for in February.
6.The lightest carry-on in OutdoorGearLab's test at 5.5 lb. At its usual $160; it dropped to about $126 during Thanksgiving week last year.
7.A light checked bag that leaves more of a 50 lb allowance for clothes. At its usual $225; it sold for $180 in late June.
8.The buy-once carry-on, with a lifetime warranty that covers airline damage. Sold by a third-party seller; its price has barely moved all year.

#1Best overall
Travelpro Platinum Elite 21-inch Expandable Carry-On Spinner
by Travelpro
The Platinum Elite 21-inch is the carry-on we would buy first. OutdoorGearLab ranked it first of the 16 carry-ons it tested, and Wirecutter names it its top pick for most travelers. The magnetic wheels line themselves up as you roll, and Travelpro's warranty covers airline damage once you register the bag.
Skip it if you fly airlines that measure carry-ons strictly, since OutdoorGearLab found it slightly over standard limits. At 8.1 lb it is also heavy for a softside bag; the Maxlite 5 below weighs about 5.5 lb.
This is not a deal yet. Amazon has it at about $390, right on its 90-day average, and it sold for about $295 in late June. We would wait for Black Friday week and look for a price near that low.
Pros
- +Magnetic self-aligning spinner wheels
- +Holds more than its outside size suggests
- +Well-organized interior
- +Warranty covers airline damage once registered
Cons
- −Heavy for a softside bag at 8.1 lb measured
- −Slightly over US carry-on limits by some measurements
- −Over carry-on size limits with the expansion open

#2Best budget
Samsonite Freeform 21-inch Carry-On Spinner
by Samsonite
The Freeform is the cheapest carry-on we would buy from a major brand. OutdoorGearLab gave it its Best Buy award among hardshells for its packing space and a shell that flexes instead of cracking, and CNN Underscored found the wheels smoother than it expected at the price. Unlike most hardside bags, it expands for the trip home.
The shell scuffs quickly, the trolley handle feels weak, and OutdoorGearLab measured it at 23 inches tall, an inch over the limit most US airlines use. If your airline sizes bags at the gate, that inch matters, and the Travelpro Platinum Elite above is the safer buy.
Amazon has it at about $130, its 90-day average. It fell to $84 in late June, so anything under $100 would be a real saving.
Pros
- +Large packing space for a hardshell carry-on
- +Expands, which most hardside bags do not
- +Shell flexes under impact instead of cracking
- +Built-in TSA lock
Cons
- −Polypropylene shell scratches easily
- −Trolley handle feels weak
- −Measured 23 inches tall, over most US carry-on limits
- Type
- Carry-on
- Size
- 21 in

Travelpro Platinum Elite 29-inch Expandable Checked Spinner
by Travelpro
For a checked bag, we would buy the Platinum Elite 29-inch. OutdoorGearLab gave it its Editors' Choice among checked suitcases for its sturdy build and its packing and compression features. It rolls on the same self-aligning wheels as our top carry-on, so the two make a matched pair, and a fold-out suiter keeps a jacket from creasing.
It is big and heavy. A full 29-inch bag can pass the usual 50 lb checked limit, so weigh it before you leave for the airport. If you would rather carry less, the Maxlite 5 29-inch below weighs about 7.9 lb.
Amazon has the grey version at about $485, its 90-day average. It sold for $370 in late June, so this is one to watch rather than buy at this price.
Pros
- +Sturdy build that topped OutdoorGearLab's checked test
- +Useful packing and compression features
- +Same self-aligning wheels as the carry-on
- +Fold-out suiter for a jacket
Cons
- −Heavy and bulky
- −Easy to pack past a 50 lb checked limit
- −Too large for some travelers
- Type
- Checked
- Size
- 29 in
- Shell
- Softside

#4
Samsonite Freeform 28-inch Large Spinner
by Samsonite
The Freeform Large is the checked hardshell for people who do not want to spend Travelpro money. OutdoorGearLab gave it a Best Buy award, and it holds roughly 112 liters at about 9.5 lb. It rolls well for a budget bag, a TSA combination lock is built in, and Samsonite backs it with a 10-year limited warranty.
As with the carry-on, the shell scratches easily, and the handle and wheels are a step below the Travelpro's. Frequent flyers who check a bag every month should spend more on the Platinum Elite 29-inch.
At about $210 it costs roughly $12 more than it has averaged over the past 90 days. It fell to about $126 in early October, so the current price is well short of a deal.
Pros
- +About 112 liters inside at roughly 9.5 lb
- +Rolls well for a budget hardshell
- +TSA combination lock included
- +10-year limited warranty
Cons
- −Shell scratches easily
- −Trolley handle weaker than pricier bags
- −Average wheels

SwissGear Sion 3-Piece Spinner Set (Carry-On, Medium, Large)
by SwissGear
If you are buying for a household or starting from nothing, the Sion set covers a carry-on, a medium and a large bag in one box. OutdoorGearLab gave the large bag its Best Buy award among softside bags for its light weight, handy storage and sturdy handle, and the carry-on stayed dry in its hose test.
The carry-on is the weak piece. OutdoorGearLab measured it at 23 inches tall, about an inch over US limits, and found it heavy for its class with basic wheels.
Price is the problem right now. At about $415 from Amazon it sits at its 90-day average, but it sold for $199 in mid-February. As we checked, our Freeform carry-on and Freeform Large together cost less.
Pros
- +Carry-on, medium and large bags in one purchase
- +Large bag is an OutdoorGearLab Best Buy
- +Plenty of pockets
- +Carry-on stayed dry in a hose test
Cons
- −Carry-on is about an inch over US size limits
- −Wheels rattle at speed
- −Thinner polyester shell than the Travelpro bags
- −Carry-on is heavy for its class
- Type
- 3-piece set
- Size
- Carry-on, medium, large

#6
Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-inch Expandable Carry-On Spinner
by Travelpro
The Maxlite 5 is for travelers who lift their own bags into the bin or fly airlines that weigh carry-ons. OutdoorGearLab measured it at 5.5 lb, the lightest of the 16 it tested, with 46 liters inside, and Wirecutter makes it its budget pick. Next to the Platinum Elite it saves about 2.5 lb.
The trade is toughness. OutdoorGearLab scored it lower on durability than the heavier softside bags, and Wirecutter notes that its airline-damage coverage lasts only one year, so anyone who flies every week should buy the Platinum Elite.
At about $160 from Amazon it is at its usual price. Its lowest of the past year was about $126, during Thanksgiving week last year, which makes it the one Pick here with a record of dropping at Black Friday.
Pros
- +Lightest bag OutdoorGearLab tested at 5.5 lb
- +Roomy at 46 liters
- +Leaves more of a carry-on weight limit for packing
Cons
- −Less durable than heavier softside bags
- −Airline-damage coverage lasts only one year
- Type
- Carry-on
- Size
- 21 in
- Shell
- Softside
- Expandable

#7
Travelpro Maxlite 5 29-inch Expandable Checked Spinner
by Travelpro
Most US airlines cap a checked bag at 50 lb, so every pound the empty bag weighs is a pound you cannot pack. The Maxlite 5 29-inch weighs about 7.9 lb for roughly 110 liters, about 1.5 lb less than the Freeform Large at a similar capacity. It also matches the Maxlite 5 carry-on if you want two bags that look alike.
No testing publication has given this size an award, and the line is less durable than the Platinum Elite. Travelers who check a bag often should spend more on the Platinum Elite 29-inch; occasional travelers who care most about weight will be happy here.
Amazon has it at about $225, its 90-day average. It sold for $180 in late June.
Pros
- +About 7.9 lb empty for roughly 110 liters
- +Leaves more of a 50 lb allowance for packing
- +Matches the Maxlite 5 carry-on
Cons
- −Less durable than the Platinum Elite
- −Bulky to store at 29 inches

- 29 in

#8Best premium
Briggs & Riley Baseline Essential 22-inch Carry-On Spinner
by Briggs & Riley
The Baseline Essential is the carry-on to buy once and keep. OutdoorGearLab ranks it second of the 16 carry-ons it tested, Wirecutter calls it its upgrade pick, and Briggs & Riley's lifetime warranty covers airline damage. Its compression system adds depth when you need it and pulls the bag flat again when you do not.
Skip it if weight matters: OutdoorGearLab measured 10.1 lb, the heaviest carry-on here. CNN Underscored also found that the external handle scuffed on stairs and cobblestones.
Amazon was not selling it when we checked. The price is from a third-party seller at $729, and its lowest of the past year was $724. Gavler reports that Briggs & Riley prices follow retailer price matching more than holiday sales, so do not expect a big Black Friday cut, and check who the seller is before you order.
Pros
- +Build and wheels among the best OutdoorGearLab has tested
- +Compression system adds depth on demand
- +Lifetime warranty covers airline damage
- +Ballistic nylon exterior
Cons
- −Heaviest carry-on here at 10.1 lb measured
- −External handle scuffed in CNN Underscored's testing
- Type
- Carry-on
- Size
- 22 in
- Shell
- Softside

How to choose luggage this Black Friday
Measure against your airline, not the label. Most major US airlines allow carry-ons up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches including wheels and handles. OutdoorGearLab measured the 21-inch Samsonite Freeform and SwissGear Sion at 23 inches tall, and opening an expansion zipper pushes most bags past the limit.
Decide if you will check a bag at all. If you fly carry-on only, one good carry-on is the whole purchase, and a set is wasted money. If you check a bag, a light one such as the Maxlite 5 29-inch leaves more of a 50 lb allowance for what you pack.
Choose softside or hardside for how you pack. Softside bags like the Travelpro and Briggs & Riley Picks have outside pockets and give a little when stuffed. Hardside shells like the Freeform pack in two zipped halves and wipe clean, but the polypropylene scuffs quickly.
Ignore the list price. The struck-through price on a card is often well above what the bag has actually sold for. Most of our Picks sold for much less in late June or early October than they cost now, so judge a Black Friday price against the 90-day average and 12-month low quoted in each Pick.
Register the warranty and check the seller. Travelpro's airline-damage cover on the Platinum Elite applies once you register the bag. Amazon usually extends returns over the holidays, but confirm the return date on your order page, and check who is selling any third-party listing such as the Briggs & Riley.
How we chose these luggage deals
Every deal on this page was selected and checked by Ed Hollinghurst. We start from products with a strong track record in independent reviews and owner feedback, then compare the current Black Friday price against the product's typical selling price over the past months, not just the inflated list price. A deal only makes the cut if the product is genuinely good and the discount is real.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon.com at the time of purchase will apply to the purchase of this product.
