Last Thanksgiving week, Amazon sold the men's Antora rain jacket for $77 and the Borealis backpack for about $69, roughly 40 percent under what each costs this fall. That is the cut worth waiting for. A month out, none of the eight Picks below is there yet: every one sits at or above its recent selling price.
We compared each price with what that exact color and size sold for on Amazon over the past 90 days and with its lowest price of the past year, not with the list price. Amazon prices North Face apparel separately for each color and size, so the price on each card applies only to the variant it names.
Our picks at a glance
8 deals1.The North Face product that suits the most people, with no sizing risk. A few dollars over its usual price; it fell to about $69 last year.
2.A waterproof shell for daily rain and short hikes. At its usual price now; it sold for $77 over Thanksgiving last year.
3.Warm, soft high-pile fleece for around town. Below list but at its usual price; it fell to $66 last December.
4.The best-reviewed women's winter coat in the range: long, waterproof, 600-fill down. About $45 above its recent average.
5.The warmest mainstream men's parka here, built for real cold. Above its usual price; it fell under $280 in Thanksgiving week last year.
6.Touchscreen gloves where every fingertip works, for fall and commuting. At its usual price; it sold for about $31 last November.
7.An insulated slipper with an outdoor sole, and a reliable gift. At its usual price, and rarely much cheaper.
8.Roomier and more comfortable than the Borealis for heavy daily loads. A little over its usual price; it sold for about $83 in early October.

#1Best overall
The North Face Borealis Backpack 28L
by The North Face
The Borealis is the North Face product we would buy for the most people, because nearly everyone carries a bag and there is no size to get wrong. OutdoorGearLab counts it among its favorite laptop packs for its storage and water-resistant fabric, and it has more owners on Amazon than any other Product we considered. It suits commuters and students who carry a laptop and a lunch.
Skip it if you haul a heavy load every day. The shoulder straps are thinly padded, and the side pockets are too shallow to hold a tall bottle securely. The Recon at the bottom of this list is the more comfortable choice for that.
At $115 it costs a few dollars more than its 90-day average, so this is not a deal yet. It sold for about $69 the day before Thanksgiving last year, and that is the price to watch for.
Pros
- +Generous storage for a commuter pack
- +Laptop compartment
- +Water-resistant fabric
- +One size, so no fit guesswork
Cons
- −Thin shoulder padding under heavy loads
- −Shallow side bottle pockets
- −Fiddly exterior bungee and stiff zippers
- Type
- 28L laptop backpack
- Insulation
- None
- Waterproof
- No (water-resistant fabric)
- Priced as
- TNF Black, one size

The North Face Men's Antora Jacket
by The North Face
The Antora is the rain jacket we would point most people to: a waterproof DryVent shell with a hood, for commutes, dog walks and short hikes. OutdoorGearLab, testing the women's version, found it kept rain out and liked the simple design. It also noted that the Antora runs clammy if you work hard in it, so hikers who sweat on long climbs should look for a more breathable shell. It does not stuff into its own pocket either.
For cold, wet days, layer the Osito or another fleece underneath; the Antora has no insulation of its own.
The price on the card is for black in Medium. At $130 it matches what it has sold for over the past 90 days, so there is no saving yet. It sold for $77 on Thanksgiving Day last year, which makes it the clearest case on this list for waiting.
Pros
- +Waterproof DryVent 2L shell
- +Simple design with few fussy extras
- +PFC-free water-repellent finish
Cons
- −Gets clammy during hard exercise
- −Does not pack into its own pocket
- −Some owners report the printed logo peeling
- Type
- Rain jacket
- Insulation
- None (shell)
- Waterproof
- Yes (DryVent 2L)

The North Face Women's Osito Jacket
by The North Face
The Osito is the soft, high-pile fleece that shows up on gift lists every winter, and it earns the spot. OutdoorGearLab gave it a Best Buy award, when it was sold as the Osito 2, for how warm and soft it is for the money. It is a jacket for around town, the school run and the couch.
It is not for the trail. Reviewers found it bulky, poor at breathing and restrictive when you reach or climb, and some owners report the fleece pilling at the cuffs after a season or two.
The card shows a saving against a $110 list price, but $84 is what this black Medium has sold for over the past three months, so it is not a Black Friday price. It dropped to $66 in early December last year.
Pros
- +Warm, soft high-pile fleece
- +Full zip, easy to wear as a light jacket
- +OutdoorGearLab Best Buy (as the Osito 2)
Cons
- −Bulky
- −Breathes poorly when you exercise
- −Limits arm movement
- −Fleece can pill at the cuffs over time
- Type
- Full-zip fleece jacket
- Insulation
- High-pile fleece
- Waterproof
- No

#4
The North Face Women's Arctic Parka
by The North Face
For women who need one coat for a real winter, the Arctic Parka has the strongest independent backing in the brand's range. Forbes named it its top women's winter coat after it handled -22°F in testing, The Inertia called it the best women's winter jacket overall, and CleverHiker rated it its best warm and waterproof parka. It pairs 600-fill recycled down with a waterproof shell and a long cut.
If your winters hover around freezing, it is more coat than you need. Some owners say it runs small, so check the size chart and consider going up a size if you layer underneath.
This is the Pick to be most patient with. At $400 for black in Medium, it costs about $45 more than its 90-day average, and its lowest price of the past year, about $265, came in April, after the cold season ended.
Pros
- +600-fill recycled down
- +Waterproof shell
- +Long cut for extra coverage
- +Handled -22°F in Forbes testing
Cons
- −Runs small for some owners
- −More coat than a mild winter calls for
- Type
- Winter parka
- Insulation
- 600-fill recycled down
- Waterproof
- Yes

#5Best premium
The North Face Men's McMurdo Parka
by The North Face
The McMurdo is the warmest mainstream North Face parka for men and our premium pick. OutdoorGearLab gave the previous McMurdo III a Best Buy award for the coldest climates, and Gear Patrol rates it its best parka overall. Like the Arctic Parka, it puts 600-fill down under a waterproof shell, here DryVent 2L, with a long hem. It is the coat for Midwest and New England winters, not for a mild one where the Antora over a fleece will do.
It is bulky, the hood is small, and owners say it runs big, so most buyers should size down.
At $450 for black in Medium, it is about $17 over its 90-day average. Last year it fell to about $280 in Thanksgiving week, the largest dollar cut among our Picks, so we would wait.
Pros
- +600-fill down under a DryVent 2L shell
- +Long hem
- +OutdoorGearLab Best Buy for the coldest climates (as the McMurdo III)
Cons
- −Bulky
- −Small hood
- −Runs big, so most owners size down
- Type
- Winter parka
- Insulation
- 600-fill down
- Waterproof
- Yes (DryVent 2L)
- Priced as

#6Best budget
The North Face Etip Recycled Gloves
by The North Face
The Etip is the cheapest Pick we would buy and the easiest gift here. CNN Underscored named it its best touchscreen glove overall, and Reviewed found that every fingertip worked on a phone screen, not only the thumb and index finger. It ranks below the jackets only because a pair of gloves is rarely anyone's main purchase.
It is a glove for fall, commuting and cold-morning runs. Tech Advisor points out that it is not waterproof, and it will not keep your hands warm in deep winter. Owners say the sizing runs small, so go up a size if you fall between two.
At $50 for black in Medium it is at its usual price. It sold for about $31 in mid-November last year, two weeks before Black Friday, so it is worth checking before the big weekend.
Pros
- +All five fingertips work on a touchscreen
- +Warmer than CNN Underscored's runner-up
- +Made with recycled materials
Cons
- −Not waterproof
- −Not warm enough for deep cold
- −Runs small
- Type
- Touchscreen gloves
- Insulation
- Light, not for deep cold
- Waterproof
- No
- Priced as
- TNF Black, Medium

The North Face Women's ThermoBall Traction Mule V
by The North Face
The ThermoBall Traction Mule V is a slipper you can wear outside: an insulated upper on a sturdier outdoor sole that handles trips to the mailbox, the garage or a campsite. CleverHiker liked it as a camp shoe and found the fit roomy, and at REI, 96 percent of more than 1,800 reviewers of the men's version recommend it. It suits anyone who lives in slippers from November to March.
The open heel makes it a poor choice for snow, and REI owners raise concerns about how the sole and upper hold up after long stretches of daily wear.
The price is for black in women's size 8. At $70 it is exactly its usual price, and it has not sold for less than $59 in the past year, so expect a modest cut at best.
Pros
- +Sturdier outdoor sole than a house slipper
- +ThermoBall synthetic insulation
- +Roomy fit
Cons
- −Sole and upper can wear out with daily use
- −Open heel, so not for snow
- Type
- Insulated mule
- Insulation
- ThermoBall synthetic
- Waterproof
- No

The North Face Recon Backpack 30L
by The North Face
The Recon is the bigger, more structured sibling of the Borealis, and reviewers rate it higher. OutdoorGearLab placed it third of 14 laptop packs for its comfort and laptop protection, and Pack Hacker scored it 8.5 out of 10. It ranks last only because most people need one backpack and the Borealis covers more of them for less. Choose the Recon if you carry a heavy load every day.
It is not waterproof, and GearJunkie found the laptop sleeve is not raised far enough off the bottom of the pack, so set it down gently.
At about $125 the Recon is roughly $6 over its 90-day average, and it sold for about $83 in early October, so we would wait for it to come back down.
Pros
- +Comfortable carry with a full load
- +Good laptop protection
- +Roomier than the Borealis at 30L
Cons
- −Not waterproof
- −Laptop sleeve sits low in the pack
- Type
- 30L laptop backpack
- Insulation
- None
- Waterproof
- No
- Priced as
- TNF Black, one size

How to choose North Face gear this Black Friday
Buy for your winter, not the logo. If you spend weeks below freezing, the McMurdo or the Arctic Parka is the coat to buy. For mild, wet winters, the Antora with a fleece underneath covers more days for less money.
Price the exact color and size you want. Amazon prices each color and size of a North Face product separately, and the card shows only the one we checked. Click through and select your own size before you judge the deal.
Size with owner reports in mind. The McMurdo runs big, while the Etip gloves and some Arctic Parka and Osito buyers report running small. Check the return date on your order before you cut the tags.
Ignore the list price. The Osito shows a $110 list price, yet it has sold for about $84 for months. Judge a price against what the item sold for over the past 90 days and its 12-month low, which we quote in every Pick.
Pick a pack by load. The Borealis handles a laptop, lunch and a jacket for most commuters. If you carry more than that every day, the Recon's extra room and padding are worth the small step up in price.
How we chose these north face deals
Every deal on this page was selected and checked by Ed Hollinghurst. We start from products with a strong track record in independent reviews and owner feedback, then compare the current Black Friday price against the product's typical selling price over the past months, not just the inflated list price. A deal only makes the cut if the product is genuinely good and the discount is real.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon.com at the time of purchase will apply to the purchase of this product.
