Apple raised Mac prices in June, so MacBook discounts look smaller this fall than they did a year ago. Amazon has still cut the models most people buy: the MacBook Air 13-inch M5 sells for about $130 under its 90-day typical price, and the 15-inch Air is down by a similar amount. Apple also announced two new MacBook Pros in late October, both shipping November 6 at full price with no independent reviews yet.
We checked every price against what each MacBook sold for at Amazon over the past 90 days and against its lowest price of the past year, not the list price. Several Picks are not discounted yet, and we say so in each one.
Our picks at a glance
8 deals1.The MacBook most people should buy: silent, fast and long-lasting, and about $130 under its 90-day typical price.
2.The cheapest new Mac, with a bright screen and an excellent keyboard. About $9 under its usual price right now.
3.The same M5 Air on a 15.3-inch screen with fuller speakers, about $130 under its 90-day typical price.
4.The Neo reviewers recommend: Touch ID and twice the storage for about $110 more than the base model. At its usual price right now.
5.The Air with room for photo libraries and many open apps, about $80 under its 90-day typical price.
6.The 14-inch Pro for coding and 4K editing, with fans, more ports and a 120Hz screen. At its usual price right now.
7.The biggest MacBook screen and the longest battery life in reviewers' tests. Close to its usual price right now.
8.Apple's fastest laptop for 3D, AI and high-end video, about $100 under its 90-day typical price.

#1Best overall
Apple MacBook Air 13-inch M5, 16GB, 512GB
by Apple
The 13-inch Air is the MacBook we would hand to most people, and Ars Technica, Macworld and RTINGS reach the same verdict. It has no fan, so it makes no noise, and the 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage in this configuration will cover documents, photos and browsing for years. RTINGS calls the M5 a modest step over the M4, which matters only if you already own last year's model.
At about $1,100 it is roughly $130 below its 90-day typical price. It sold for about $900 in May, before Apple's price rise, so a deeper Black Friday cut is possible. The limits are two ports on one side and a 60Hz screen. If you want more screen, the 15-inch Air below has the same chip.
Pros
- +Fanless, so it stays silent under load
- +Battery rated for up to 18 hours
- +16GB memory and 512GB storage in this configuration
- +Strong build and keyboard
Cons
- −Only two USB-C ports, both on one side
- −60Hz screen with no HDR
- −Slows down during long video exports
- Chip
- Apple M5
- Memory
- 16GB
- Storage
- 512GB SSD
- Screen
- 13.6-inch, 60Hz
- Ports
- 2 Thunderbolt, MagSafe

#2Best budget
Apple MacBook Neo 13-inch, 8GB, 256GB
by Apple
The Neo is the cheapest way into a new Mac. Notebookcheck called it a surprisingly good laptop, and Engadget and Tom's Hardware both single out the bright screen and the keyboard. For schoolwork, email, documents and streaming it does what most people ask of a laptop.
Notebookcheck's biggest complaint is the missing keyboard backlight. Macworld notes it runs only one external display, and the 20W adapter in the box charges it slowly. The 8GB of memory is the real limit, because it cannot be upgraded. At about $680 it is only a few dollars under its usual price, and it sold for under $600 in March. Buy it if you need it now; if you can stretch, the Neo with Touch ID below is the better version.
Pros
- +Bright screen for its class
- +Excellent keyboard and trackpad
- +Solid build with nothing that feels cheap
Cons
- −8GB memory cannot be upgraded
- −Keyboard is not backlit
- −No Touch ID on the 256GB model
- −Runs only one external display
- Chip
- Apple A18 Pro
- Memory
- 8GB
- Storage
- 256GB SSD
- Screen
- 13-inch
- Ports
- 2 USB-C (one USB 3, one USB 2)

#3
Apple MacBook Air 15-inch M5, 16GB, 512GB
by Apple
Size up to the 15-inch Air if the laptop is your only screen. Its 15.3-inch display fits two documents side by side without squinting, and Engadget points to the better speakers as the other reason to size up. Macworld notes that the chip, silent design and battery life match the 13-inch, so the extra money buys space and sound, not speed.
Skip it if you carry your laptop every day; the 13-inch is easier on a shoulder. At about $1,300 it sits roughly $130 below its 90-day typical price, a cut similar to the 13-inch model's, though it went for about $1,100 in May.
Pros
- +15.3-inch screen fits two windows side by side
- +Fuller speakers than the 13-inch
- +Same silent, fanless M5 performance
Cons
- −Only two USB-C ports
- −60Hz screen
- −Takes more room in a bag than the 13-inch
- Chip
- Apple M5
- Memory
- 16GB
- Storage
- 512GB SSD
- Screen
- 15.3-inch, 60Hz
- Ports
- 2 Thunderbolt, MagSafe

#4
Apple MacBook Neo 13-inch, 8GB, 512GB, Touch ID
by Apple
Macworld's advice is to buy this Neo rather than the base model, and we agree. The extra $110 or so buys Touch ID, which saves typing your password many times a day, and doubles the storage to 512GB. MacMost found the 256GB model leaves little free space, so the larger drive is what keeps a Neo comfortable for a few years.
Everything else matches the base Neo, including the 8GB of memory and the unlit keyboard. It is not discounted: at about $790 it sits at its usual price, and it sold for about $690 in March. If you want a Neo, this is the one to watch through Thanksgiving week.
Pros
- +Touch ID for unlocking and passwords
- +Twice the storage of the base Neo
- +Same bright screen and excellent keyboard
Cons
- −8GB memory cannot be upgraded
- −Keyboard is not backlit
- −Runs only one external display
- Chip
- Apple A18 Pro
- Memory
- 8GB
- Storage
- 512GB SSD
- Screen
- 13-inch
- Ports
- 2 USB-C (one USB 3, one USB 2)

Apple MacBook Air 13-inch M5, 24GB, 1TB
by Apple
This is the Air for people who edit photos, keep a large library on the laptop or run many apps at once. Macworld suggests 24GB or more for creative work, and because Apple solders the memory and storage, the only time to choose them is when you buy. The 1TB drive also leaves room for years of photos without an external disk.
It is the same fanless machine as our top Pick, so long video exports slow down in the same way; if that is your daily work, the 14-inch MacBook Pro below has fans. At about $1,600 it is roughly $80 under its 90-day typical price, a smaller cut than the 16GB model gets, and it sold for about $1,300 in May.
Pros
- +24GB memory for photo editing and heavy multitasking
- +1TB holds a large photo library without an external drive
- +Same silent, fanless design as the base Air
Cons
- −Only two USB-C ports
- −60Hz screen
- −Slows down during long video exports
- Chip
- Apple M5
- Memory
- 24GB
- Storage
- 1TB SSD
- Screen
- 13.6-inch, 60Hz
- Ports
- 2 Thunderbolt, MagSafe

#6
Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch M5 Pro, 24GB, 1TB
by Apple
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro is the one to buy if you write code, edit 4K video or keep heavy apps open all day. Macworld points to its ability to hold full speed through long jobs where the fanless Air slows down, and to the extra ports and support for three external displays. The 120Hz mini-LED screen is a visible step up from the Air's.
TechRadar called the M5 Pro a small upgrade over the M4 Pro, so owners of last year's model can skip it. At about $2,290 it is at its usual price, and it sold for under $2,000 in early May. Amazon showed a shipping delay when we checked, so look at the delivery date before you order.
Pros
- +Holds its speed through long renders and builds
- +120Hz mini-LED XDR screen
- +HDMI, SD card slot and three Thunderbolt ports
- +Runs up to three external displays
Cons
- −Heavier than the MacBook Air
- −Small step up from the M4 Pro model
- Chip
- M5 Pro, 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU
- Memory
- 24GB
- Storage
- 1TB SSD
- Screen
- 14.2-inch, 120Hz mini-LED
- Ports
- 3 Thunderbolt, HDMI, SD, MagSafe

Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch M5 Pro, 24GB, 1TB
by Apple
The 16-inch Pro trades portability for the biggest screen on any MacBook and the longest battery life we found in any review. Tom's Guide ran its web-browsing test for 21 hours and 10 minutes, and TechRadar says it outlasts every Apple laptop it has tested. This model also gets a larger M5 Pro chip than the 14-inch, with an 18-core CPU and a 20-core GPU.
It is heavy for a daily commute, and Which? called the price eye-watering. Tom's Guide also notes it is only a small step over the M4 Pro model. At about $2,750 it is close to its usual price, and it sold for about $2,450 in May. Amazon listed a shipping delay when we checked.
Pros
- +Over 21 hours in Tom's Guide's web battery test
- +16.2-inch 120Hz mini-LED XDR screen
- +Larger M5 Pro with an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU
- +HDMI, SD card slot and three Thunderbolt ports
Cons
- −Heavy to carry every day
- −Small step up from the M4 Pro model
- Chip
- M5 Pro, 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU
- Memory
- 24GB
- Storage
- 1TB SSD
- Screen
- 16.2-inch, 120Hz mini-LED
- Ports
- 3 Thunderbolt, HDMI, SD, MagSafe

#8Best premium
Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch M5 Max, 36GB, 2TB
by Apple
The 16-inch M5 Max is Apple's fastest laptop, and Macworld's verdict is that it is the one to get if money is no object. The 32-core GPU, 36GB of memory and 2TB drive are aimed at 3D work, AI models and high-end video, and AppleInsider likens it to carrying a Mac Studio. We chose the 16-inch over the 14-inch Max because Notebookcheck measured the smaller one throttling under sustained load.
Most people do not need this much power, and Macworld found only a small CPU gain over the M4 Max. At about $3,800 it is roughly $100 under its 90-day typical price, but it sold for about $3,500 on October 19, so we would hold out for a return to that price. Amazon showed a shipping delay when we checked.
Pros
- +32-core GPU for 3D rendering and high-end video
- +36GB memory and 2TB storage
- +Holds its speed better than the 14-inch M5 Max
- +Fast SSD and strong battery life for its power
Cons
- −Heavy to carry
- −Small CPU gain over the M4 Max
- Chip
- M5 Max, 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU
- Memory
- 36GB
- Storage
- 2TB SSD
- Screen
- 16.2-inch, 120Hz mini-LED
- Ports
- 3 Thunderbolt, HDMI, SD, MagSafe

How to choose a MacBook this Black Friday
Start with the Air unless you know why you need more. The 13-inch MacBook Air handles office work, school and photo edits for years. Move to a Pro only for long video exports, large code builds or 3D work, and see our laptop deals if you are open to Windows or a Chromebook.
Buy the memory and storage you will need in five years. Apple solders both to the board, so neither can be upgraded later. 16GB and 512GB suit most people. Choose 24GB if you edit photos or run many apps at once, and accept the Neo's 8GB only for light use.
Decide on the new models first. Apple's M6 14-inch MacBook Pro and its touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro both ship November 6 at full price, with no independent reviews yet. The M5 Pro and M5 Max models on this list are still current, and each has sold for less earlier this year than it does now.
Ignore the list price. Apple's June price increase raised list prices, so a cut from list can still leave a MacBook above what it sold for in the spring. We compare with the 90-day typical price and tell you when a Pick has been lower.
Use the holiday return window. Amazon usually extends returns on items bought in November and December into January, which gives you time to test a keyboard and screen before committing.
How we chose these macbook deals
Every deal on this page was selected and checked by Ed Hollinghurst. We start from products with a strong track record in independent reviews and owner feedback, then compare the current Black Friday price against the product's typical selling price over the past months, not just the inflated list price. A deal only makes the cut if the product is genuinely good and the discount is real.
